{"id":23367,"date":"2019-03-15T20:04:39","date_gmt":"2019-03-15T18:04:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.onisilos.gr\/?p=23367"},"modified":"2019-03-15T20:04:39","modified_gmt":"2019-03-15T18:04:39","slug":"the-number-of-citizens-increased-by-130-thousands-in-35-years-says-akinci","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onisilos.gr\/?p=23367","title":{"rendered":"The number of \u201ccitizens\u201d increased by 130 thousands in 3,5 years, says Akinci\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">15\/3\/2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p>PRESS AND INFORMATION OFFICE<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Under the title \u201cPopulation is the biggest problem\u201d, Turkish Cypriot newspaper <b>Havadis<\/b>(15.03.19) reports that <b>Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci has said that the number of \u201cTRNC citizens\u201d increased by 130 thousands during the past 3,5 years.<\/b> Addressing yesterday a ceremony on the occasion of the Medicine Day, <b>Akinci noted that around 400-500 persons are granted \u201ccitizenship\u201d every month by the current \u201cgovernment\u201d and underlined the need of holding a population census and of preparing a \u201ccitizenship law\u201d.<\/b> He said, inter alia, the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u201c[\u2026]<b>The official number of 220 thousands was given to me for the population 3,5 years ago. The number given by the interior ministry 1-2 weeks ago, the number of those having identity of the TRNC is 343 thousands. The number publicly announced by the esteemed [interior] minister later is 350 thousands. In this case, the number of our citizens increased by 130 thousands in 3,5 years<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>During the period of the past government, around a thousand persons had been granted citizenship every month. The current government grants around 400-500 citizenships every month<\/b>. These are the citizenships granted by the ministry during the normal process. This number is not the 3-5 persons announced by the council of ministers. [\u2026]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>The starting point of this issue is a serious population census<\/b>. Let us put forward the situation and then let us turn and look forward, say where we are going, what we want to do in this country, what and how we program and how we will proceed from now on. <b>We know that work is being done on the citizenship law, but somehow it cannot come out from the files and come to the light. It must come<\/b>. [\u2026]\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">(I\/Ts.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>\u201cOzersay: \u2018351 thousand citizens exist, 61 thousands of them are abroad\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Under the above title, Turkish Cypriot newspaper <b>Yeni D\u00fczen<\/b>(15.03.19) reports that <b>Kudret Ozersay<\/b>, self-styled foreign minister of the breakaway regime in the occupied area of the Republic of Cyprus, <b>has said that according to the \u201cregister\u201d of the \u201cministry of interior\u201d, 351 thousand \u201cTRNC citizens\u201d exist and 61 thousands of them live abroad.<\/b> Speaking yesterday to a group of journalists on a program of illegal Bayrak television, Ozersay was called to comment on statements made yesterday by Turkish Cypriot leader Akinci on the population issue and the need of holding a population census. Ozersay claimed that some numbers were confused and argued that it was not right for politicians to refer to a number on this issue. <b>He said that in the \u201cministry\u2019s\u201d register there were around 290 thousand \u201cTRNC citizens\u201d who live in the occupied area of the island and added that the number of those permanently residing in the occupied area is different<\/b>. <b>He argued that the number of \u201ccitizens\u201d could not be given with a population census, because there are some \u201ccitizens\u201d who live abroad. <\/b>He also said that the \u201cinterior minister\u201d would make a written statement on the population issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Referring to the \u201ccitizenship law\u201d, Ozersay said that the \u201cgovernment\u201d was working on the matter since it came to \u201cpower\u201d<\/b> and claimed: \u201cStatements as if someone is trying to delay this issue should be avoided. This government is taking the population issue seriously. We take steps which include the entrances to the country and the exits and the citizenship law. [\u2026] <b>An effort was exerted to put an order to the citizenship practice and a distance was covered. Is this enough? No, it is not. This is why we have prepared more than one citizenship draft-laws and we will send them to the assembly within ten days<\/b>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>When one of the journalists recalled to him that two years ago Akinci had said during the Cyprus negotiations that the number of population in the occupied area of the island was 220 thousands and asked him whether the Greek Cypriot side will accept the population which increased to 354 thousands now, Ozersay alleged that it was not correct to say that the \u201cTRNC citizens\u201d will not become \u201ccitizens of the common state\u201d in case they exceed a certain number.<\/b> He claimed that the data of the \u201cinterior ministry\u201d should be taken as basis, that the data given by the \u201cgovernment\u201d were \u201cconsistent\u201d and that if Akinci misunderstood something, this could be overcome.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Referring to the four parties in the \u201cgovernment\u201d, Ozersay said that there was a harmony in general among them, but there were issues on which serious debates were taking place. He recalled that the four parties cooperate by preserving their views on the Cyprus problem and added: \u201cWhen the way for the solution of the problem is discussed, everyone speaks on behalf of his party, but when policies on issues such as the future of the negotiations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the isolation, the representation of the Turkish Cypriots in various organizations are discussed, the fact that the foreign minister carries out these [policies] should not be undermined.\u00a0 [\u2026]\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Asked whether he would suggest in the \u201cassembly\u201d to abandon the discussions for finding a federal solution in Cyprus<\/b> since he had stated that the majority of the 50 \u201cdeputies\u201d did not consider the federal partnership to be realistic, <b>Ozersay replied that he had made the above-mentioned statement after the \u201cspeaker of the assembly\u201d referred to a consensus among the political parties following a closed-door session of the \u201cbody\u201d, and added that normally he would not have made such statement. \u201cThere is not much time left until the presidential elections. The newly elected person will determine the course within the framework of the power he will be given by the citizens\u201d, he argued<\/b>. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><b>Commenting on Serdar Denktas\u2019 statement that the current \u201cgovernment\u201d would continue even if all party leaders became candidates in the \u201cpresidential elections\u201d, Ozersay said he did not think that this statement was sincere and added that he could not confirm it.<\/b> He noted that a \u201cdifferent environment\u201d could be created during the \u201celection campaign\u201d. Asked what his stance would be in case the opposition National Unity Party proposed to support his candidature for the \u201cpresidency\u201d, Ozersay replied that he did not bargain for another \u201cgovernment\u201d when there was a \u201cgovernment\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Asked on the issue of adopting the \u201cpresidential system\u201d, Ozersay noted that he did not say that they should definitely abandon the \u201cparliamentary system\u201d, but some \u201cconstitutional amendments\u201d should take place. <b>He said that the \u201cprovisional article 10\u201d of the \u201cconstitution\u201d was important and argued that this \u201carticle\u201d should be discussed in parallel to a \u201cdefense and military agreement\u201d with Turkey.<\/b> <b>He underlined the \u201cneed of clarifying the powers\u201d of the \u201cpresident\u201d adding that a \u201cpresident\u201d, who was directly elected by the \u201cpeople\u201d, should have more powers in the interior matters as well and his powers in the Cyprus problem should be clarified<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span
